OUR STORY

Founded in 1946, Ichkhanian Bakery has grown from a small neighborhood oven into a multi-generational family business.

Its story is one of heritage, perseverance, and craftsmanship that has remained unchanged through time.

1946: The Start

Yeghia Ichkhanian, originally from Aintab, opens a small bakery in Zokak el-Blat, Beirut. To make it happen, his wife Arusiag sells her wedding gold bracelet. The bakery is first known as “Pour Yeghia”.

Late 40s: The craft

What begins as a simple oven baking bread from customers’ flour soon evolves into something more meaningful. Yeghia introduces Armenian specialties, Lahmadjun and Brioche; recipes brought by Armenians from Cilicia. The bakery quickly becomes a local favorite, first among Armenian families, then across the wider Beirut community.

1972: The shift

After Yeghia’s passing in 1972, his son Jean returned from Germany, leaving his studies behind to take over the bakery, continuing its production under the new name "Pour Ichkhanian".

1984: The legacy

Following Jean’s passing in 1984, his mother and wife, Azadouhi Kaptanian-Ichkhanian, took over the bakery. With a small team, Azadouhi sustained the bakery through decades of change, serving generations of customers. Even Arusiag, remained part of the daily work well into her later years.

2011: the expansion

Years later, Azadouhi’s son, Elie, joined the family business. In 2011, he opened a second branch in Zalka, marking a new phase of growth for the family business. In 2025, he expanded the space to accommodate a larger seating area and introduced new brioche and salad sections.

the present

Today, under Elie Ichkhanian’s direction, the bakery continues to grow, expanding its offerings while staying rooted in family tradition. Alongside him is a dedicated team, many of whom have been part of the bakery for decades. In 2026, Ichkhanian Bakery proudly celebrates 80 years of serving its community.
